Modern Family Firms: The Missing Piece in Family Business Studies
细分领域
Reconceptualizing Modern Family Firms’ Processes and Outcomes
How is the concept of “modern family” defined in family business literature? To what extentdoes family business literature consider the modern family structure as a variable of interest? What are the inherent values, traditions, and heritage associated with a modern family firm?
Are modern family structures more or less prone than traditional ones to entrepreneurial (e.g., entrepreneurial entry, exit, re-entry) and strategic actions (e.g., corporate venturing, innovation, internationalization, diversification, M&A, organizational turnaround; Minola et al., 2021; Hoskisson et al., 2017)? How do these actions influence the success or failure of a modern family firm?
How do economic and noneconomic-related goals evolve in relation to the evolution of the modern family structure? More specifically, how does socioemotional wealth evolve or change in relation to the development of a modern family structure (Chirico and Kellermanns, 2022; Gomez-Mejia et al., 2007)?
Are modern family structures more prone than traditional ones to long-term orientation and continuity (Pinelli, Debellis, and De Massis, 2024) or exit (Symeonidou, DeTienne, and Chirico 2022), especially under troubled economic times (e.g., financial distress, external shocks, Covid-19 pandemic; Chirico et al., 2020; De Massis and Rondi, 2020)?
Modern Family Firms and Transgenerational Entrepreneurship and Succession
How do alternative incumbent-successor relationships (e.g., uncle-nephew; homosexual stepparent-child, homosexual parent-stepchild) impact transgenerational entrepreneurship and succession in modern family firms (Wilmes, Brändle, and Kuckertz, 2023)?
How do modern parental behaviors affect transgenerational entrepreneurship and succession?
How do succession strategies differ within modern family firms compared to traditional family firms?
Is each successor in a modern family firm treated equally? If not, how and why? Are the successors of a modern family firm (e.g., stepchildren, adopted children from a same-sex partner, same-sex partner of the incumbent) accepted as legitimate heirs?
Modern Family Firms and Institutional Constraints
Which existing theories and perspectives can illuminate modern family dynamics and outcomes in the context of each country’s institutional constraints? Or, are new theories and logics specifically needed to examine modern family firms?
How do institutional constraints affect relationships among family members in modern business families? How does the institutional context impact the dynamics among family and non-family owners and employees in modern family firms?
How do succession arrangements differ between modern and traditional business families across various countries? How does the institutional context influence the choice of successor in a modern family?
How do institutional constraints within a country affect the migration and emergence of modern business families in other countries (e.g., in relation to countries where same-sex marriage is legal, such as in North America and Australia; illegal, such as in most African and Asian countries; or partially recognized, such as in Italy and the Czech Republic)?
